I think computer science is limitless.

Also, you don't need a degree to get into developing. There are abt ~10 web developers where I work, and not all of them have bachelor degrees. You can also do a tafe course, or cert or whatever, that gives you those skills, then after that experience is what matters. The degree is pretty fun though, I programmed a miniature elevator, routing between mobile phones and heaps of other cool stuff.

I got a degree in BCompSci (Computer Science), once I had my degree I sat around at home for a while still working part-time at one of the jobs I had during Uni (College if you're in the states). I had basic skills in PHP and MySQL (what I use now) and extensive knowledge in other languages and OO concepts. My mate then told me where he was working they needed another web developer, I applied, got the job and here I am 10 months later. :)

how did you get that. do you have any certifications in anything.
joshig1983 (August 11, 2008 at 2:47 pm)
If you have an idea, refine it enough and if you are capable of implementing each detail of it, you can implement the whole solution. A lot of the things in sci fi are not yet possible because only a few little parts haven't been solved. Computer hardware is the main problem in the video. The graphical interfaces are more work of artists than computer science graduates.
joshig1983 (August 11, 2008 at 2:41 pm)
The software in that video already exists or can be easily implemented. The unsolved problems are with the lack of physical capabilities for the devices in that video. The robot is moving better than a fighter jet. Computer science grads won't make the depiction in the video a reality. Engineers will.
joshig1983 (August 11, 2008 at 2:29 pm)
If you want to be a graphic designer, study visual art. If you want to create computer hardware, study electrical engineering. Computer science basically studies how to make computer software. There are many job titles but they won't be very meaningful without familiarity with software development. What is a software engineer? What is a database administrator, network administrator, computer programmer, web programmer, or a software analyst? Employers can use flashy names to attract workers.

Maybe they could show that relationship between engineers and software developers more accurately by showing such a team in a robotics competition and ending with each member explaining what each contributed. Advertising a career in computer science like this video is like advertising a career in physics by showing a space ship getting sucked into a black hole with R&B music playing in the background.
